Tell you where I’m from with words laced in pride
It’s where the earth reaches up to touch the sky
Mountains that stay strong steady and true
Are the foundation on which I grew
When you’re young you don’t think they have much to teach
Their valleys and towns are no place to spread your wings
I left there in a pile of rust
Watched them in my rear view disappear in the dust

Years lying in wake reveal reasons to reminisce
So many shades of green in the arms of those rolling hills
Held sweet summers born out of winters surrender to spring
When they were losing that grip God would slowly paint the trees
Shadows spread like a blanket across the grass
Cutting through the hollers a train running over tracks
In remembrance their rivers and ridges talk to me
And want to know why did I ever leave?

Out here on the run never really knowing what for
Further along I get I feel those highlands pulling more
